Backswing straight back vs an arc

This photo on the left demonstrated the players desire to take the club straight back.  This caused his elbows to pull apart and opened the club face.  The ball would start straight and weakly curve to the right.  After explaining the grid and stating that since we stand to the side and swing in an arc, the club should not go straight back and straight through.  I asked him to bend his lead knee and straighten the trail leg immediately.  That allowed him to turn his trail hip to the his midline.  These 2 actions created the space necessary to swing the club in an arc.  The result of these 2 instructions changed his ball flight to a ball that started to the right and curved to the left, a stock draw.  From this point forward in this session no balls curved to the right.  Mission accomplished!
